In a similar situation, you may say your kid is a brat and call him/her that often but you would not be OK with a teacher or a stranger you met in the store calling your child a snot nose brat.
I am African American and I know hundreds of people of color and they do not use this term at all. You do not apply this logic to anything else you do. You know right from wrong and to use as your defense that the people I am offending also do it simply does not make it right. I think defending the use of a derogatory word by saying that these people use it so I should therefore use it, is a cop out.
